There was a time when I obsessively awaited the arrival of new Interweave magazines and bought them all on first sight. I think of it as the "Golden Age of Modern Knitting," and it lasted from about 2008 until 2014. I knew the names of knitters frequently featured in magazines and Berroco pattern collections by name, and I eagerly awaited their stand-alone books. Cirilia Rose, Veronik Avery, and the ladies from Kelbourne Woolens immediately come to mind.

At some point, the patterns I waited so long to get my hands on stopped feeling quite so new. While my enthusiasm for knitting has yet to wane in the 15 years I've been doing it, the knitting world was feeling a little uninspired. I think I must not have been the only one to feel this way--Veronik Avery shuttered her magazine and yarn line, my beloved Classic Elite Yarns closed up shop, and Interweave started doing (in my opinion) gimmicky themed issues. Lately my pattern purchases have been made mostly online.

But I spied the fall issue of Interweave Knits on the newsstand at Michaels, and it drew me in like a late-summer moth to an early-autumn bonfire. The issue features three sections: a grouping of designs centered around the theme of Swedish fredagsmys or "Friday cozy," a collection perfect for a brisk day at a harvest festival, and an assortment of accessories to stay warm around the fire pit as fall starts to turn into winter.

Maybe it's because I devour all those books about the contented lives of people in Nordic countries. Or maybe it's my obsessive love of all Harvest-Festival-related episodes of Parks & Recreation. Oooooor maybe it's the fact that my boyfriend is constructing a massive fire pit area as I type, but these themes are right up my alley. Here are my must-knits from each section:

Fredagsmys: Wine Press Pullover by Moon Eldridge

Those. Sleeves. Also, it's knit in the round from the top down, which is my favorite right now. I could see myself snuggled up in this beauty for wine night with some girlfriends.

Festivities: Caramel Apple Pullover by Anne Jones

I mean... the name. Could it be more "FALL"? I also like how delicate the cables are. I'm more of a lace knitter than a cable knitter, but this pullover is cropped, so there isn't that much cabling. Perfect for watching-while-knitting: Season 3 of Parks & Rec, pumpkin spice lattes (duh), and a binge of fall Hallmark movies.

Fiery Nights: Balefire Mittens by Mone Drager

I really like this combo of texture and variegation. My hands get cold easily, so I'd probably knit this as written, but it would be easy to convert these into fingerless gloves. Of my three picks, this is probably the only project guaranteed to be finished before the winter issue hits newsstands.

Are you a knitter? What are you excited to make and do this fall?
